Manuscrits de l'oeuvre de Jacques de Voragine à la bibliothèque universitaire d'Olomouc (CZ)

Le catalogue de la bibliothèque universitaire d'Olomouc, édité à titre posthume en traduction allemande (M. Boháček et F. Čáda, Beschreibung der mittelalterlichen Handschriften der Wissenschaftlichen Staastbibliothek von Olmütz, Cologne-Weimar-Vienne, 1994), donne la mesure du succès considérable qu'ont rencontré les sermons de Jacques de Voragine dans les régions les plus orientales de l'Empire. Sur les 400 manuscrits médiévaux décrits, une dizaine transmet l'une ou l'autre des collections homilétiques du dominicain, soit seules, soit farcies de sermons inauthentiques. Viennent en tête les Sermones de sanctis et les Sermones de tempore (5 manuscrits chacun), loin devant le Quadragesimale (1 manuscrit). Ces chiffres en font le prédicateur médiéval le plus diffusé en Moravie. Rançon de cette popularité, rares sont les copistes qui déclinent correctement son identité. Quand l'anonymat n'est pas de mise, son prénom est le plus souvent travesti en Jacobinus. Au total, un seul témoin prend soin de préciser son appartenance à l'ordre dominicain et son accession au siège archiépiscopal de Gênes (M II 132, n°264, p.475-6). D'un point de vue chronologique, la fortune de Voragine en terre morave s'est pourtant fait attendre : le plus ancien manuscrit remonte à 1354 (M I 233, n°57, p.125-126) ; tous les autres datent du XV^e siècle, quand la chaire s'impose comme un outil de communication de masse. Encore remarquera-t-on que sa réception est loin de se limiter à un usage pastoral immédiat. Les possesseurs se révèlent être très majoritairement des maisons cartusiennes et plus rarement cisterciennes, dominicaines ou encore franciscaines de l'Observance, ce qui ne surprend pas dans une bibliothèque dont le noyau, de provenance jésuite, s'est enrichi sous Joseph II des fonds médiévaux des ordres contemplatifs. Aussi bien les sermons de Voragine sont-ils souvent associés à des traités de théologie ou de spiritualité (Sermons de saint Bernard, Breviloquium de saint Bonaventure, Livre des Sentences de Pierre Lombard), autant de best-sellers destinés à la lecture privée et/ou dévote ; la présence dans quelques manuscrits (M II 95, n°231, p.433-4 ; M II 225, n°332, p.580-1) de tables ou de registres destinés en faciliter la lecture achève de faire de ce vade-mecum de la prédication un classique de la littérature religieuse du temps.

Objectifs

Evaluer la fiabilité de l'édition Clutius

Le projet de recherche philologique sur les collections de sermons De sanctis [=DS] et du De tempore [=DT] d eJacques de Voragine est né avec comme objectif primaire l'évaluation de la fiabilité de l'édition Clutius, la forme textuelle qui fiat l'objet de l'indexation dans le Thesaurus.
Il ne s'agit pas d'une tâche aisée. Il s'agit d'affronter un texte long (de 150 à 350 folia manuscrits) et transmis par des centaines de manuscrits. En outre, il est nécessaire d'élaborer une méthode philologique non conventionnelle, étant donnée la nécessité d'arriver en un temps relativement bref à un verdict sur la fiabilité de l'édition Clutius et de se confronter à un champ d'enquête particulièrement vaste.

Définir un texte critique

Il s'agit donc d'un travail important, mais ce sont justement l'ampleur et la qualité du travail nécessaire pour évaluer de façon critique l'édition Clutius qui permettent un objectif plus ambitieux et atteignable grâce aux données recueillies et traitées au cours de cette première phase de travail : l'édition critique du texte des sermones De sanctis et De tempore.

La méthode philologique

Les macrovariantes

L'évaluation de la fiabilité de l'édition Clutius doit prendre en compte deux aspects principaux : (a) les macrovariantes du texte, c'est-à-dire les sermons inclus dans les recueils, dont le nombre peut varier aussi considérablement dans chaque témoin (aussi bien que dans les diverses éditions imprimées) [1], (b) les microvariantes du texte, c'es-à-dire les mots et les passages à l'intérieur de chacun des sermons.
Le premier aspect, l'évaluation de la fiabilité de Clutius en ce qui concerne l'authenticité des sermons inclus dans l'édition Clutius, ou dans la liste de Schneyer (ou dans les deux), peut tirer profit des caractéristiques propres de la méthode de travail de Jacques de Voragine, qui a toujours utilisé le même répertoire d'images et de figures rhétoriques, de distinctiones et de métaphores, pour la composition de chaque sermon [2].

Le témoignage des manuscrits les plus anciens

Le premier pas pour l'évaluation de l'authenticité des macrovariantes a été de vérifier combien de sermons et lesquels étaient présents au stade le plus ancien de la tradition manuscrite. Pour la collection De tempore il n'y a pas de problèmes. Jacques de Voragine écrit lui-même dans sa préface avoir composé trois sermons pour chaque dimanche et cela a limité la liberté de ceux qui auraient pu ajouter ou retirer des sermons, et a également facilité notre activité philologique. Le cas des Sermones de sanctis est différent, dans la tradition manuscrite desquels ont été trouvés dix sermons douteux, qui étaient présents dans certains témoins plus anciens, mais non dans l'édition Clutius ou dans le répertoire de Schneyer, et il s'est révélé dans un témoin (Firenze, Bibl. Medicea Laurenziana, Plut. sin. IV) une différence substantielle de contenu qui posait le problème d'une éventuelle autre rédaction (ou de la composition d'un recueil en tout cas « différent ») et de son authenticité.

La structure des sermons douteux

Dans les sermons douteux et dans le texte du recueil florentin il est cependant possible de reconnaître l'usus scribendi caractéristique de Jacques de Voragine : les métaphores, les distinctiones, les étymologies, les figures rhétoriques, les citations des sources proviennent de la même « boîte à outils » d'où proviennent les éléments constitutifs des sermons retenus comme authentiques pour être présents de manière concordante dans la tradition manuscrite ou pour avoir été l'objet d'un travail ecdotique (c'est le cas des Sermones Quadragesimales et du matériel homilétique présent dans la Legenda aurea).

Résultats : authenticité des sermons et identification des deux différentes collections De sanctis de Jacques de Voragine

Grâce à la vérification du contenu des témoins les plus anciens, il a été possible (a) de reconnaître l'authenticité des sermons douteux présents dans la tradition manuscrite la plus ancienne et (b) de reconnaître qu'existaient deux différentes collections De sanctis de Jacques de Voragine, comme Jacques lui-même l'avait écrit dans sa Chronica Ianuensis. La récente études de Dorothée Servera Barbiche [3] a confirmé ces résultats, en proposant d'autres perspectives intéressantes pour la poursuite des recherches sur la datation et sur la structure de cette seconde collection.

Les microvariantes

Les manuscrits de référence

Le problème des microvariantes du texte est différent. La question de l'authenticité de chacune des leçons doit prendre en compte la nécessité de parvenir à un jugement critique sans attendre une hypothétique collation (d'ailleurs impossible, vu les limites de la vie humaine) de tous les témoins pour tout le texte. On a donc élaboré une processus philologique qui peut aboutir en quatre phases à une édition critique, mettant à profit les résultats intermédiaires afin de pouvoir accompagner utilement le classement du Thesaurus et pour pouvoir obtenir dès les premiers pas de l'enquête une évaluation superficielle de l'édition Clutius. Les quatre phases prévoient : (a) l'identification d'une sorte de bon manuscrit qui puisse être utilisé comme point de référence (et exemplaire de collation) dans les confrontations avec l'édition Clutius ; (b) la collation de Clutius et du manuscrit de référence, avec la compilation conséquente d'une liste de chapitre témoins et de loci critici, identifiés sur la base des variantes les plus significatives reconnues durant la collation ; (c) la définition de certaines lignes générales de la tradition manuscrite, reconstruites à travers la collation dans les loci critici de cinq témoins choisis pour leur ancienneté et leur aire géographique de provenance ; (d) l'édition critique proprement dite.

De sanctis : ms. Paris, BnF, lat. 15949

Le ms. lat. 15949 de la BnF de Paris est un témoin de frandes dimensions (335 x 225 mm), formé de deux parties contemporaines reliées ensemble. La première partie contient le recueil des sermons De tempore de Jacques de Voragine, précédé d'une table des incipit et de deux tabulae distinctionum. La seconde partie contient le recueil De sanctis, précédé lui aussi d'une table des distinctions, avec pour incipit :

Incipiunt distinctiones super festiuos sermones Iacobi Ianuensis secundum ordinem alphabeticum quas compilauit quidam studens in domo de sorbona orate pro eo et explicit : Expliciunt theumata sermonum de sanctis fraris Iacobi Ianuensis archiepiscopi de ordine fratrum predicatorum et sunt in numero CCC et XVII.

Le ms. a été doné à la Sorbonne par Gérard d'Utrecht [4], comme l'atteste une note finale :

Iste liber est pauperum magistrum de sorbona ex legato magistri girardi de traiecto quondam socii domus. in quo continentur sermones festorum per circulum anni fratris Iacobi ianuensis. pretii lx s.

Deux scribes se sont succédés pour la copie [5]. Le deuxième a également transcrit pour le même Gérard d'Utrecht une partie du ms. lat. 15966 de la BnF. Et puisque le ms. 15966 a été copié en 1319, ce témoin ne doit pas être très éloigné dans le temps.
Ce témoin présente deux intérêts. Le premier est que le texte a été classifié par allegoriae, exempla, distinctiones, probationes et témoigne de l'utilisation ‘pratique' de ces recueils, dont la consultation était facilitée par les tables préliminaires [6] : il existe un système de référence grâce auquel les tabulae renvoyaient aux lettres transcrites en marge de chaque sermon.
Le second est que différents témoins ont été utilisés pour la copie afin d'établir un meilleur texte, comme le montrent les notes marginales précédées du mot alias. Il s'agit donc d'une oeuvre philologique ante litteram, qui dispose aussi d'une sorte d'apparat sui generis.
Le texte (qui comporte 317 sermons) n'est pas complet : les sermons 580, 581 et 581a, c'est-à-dire les derniers sermons de commemoratione mortuorum, ont été omis.

De tempore : ms. Pise, Bibl. Cateriniana, 147

Le ms. Pise, Biblioteca Cathariniana 147 est datable entre la fin du XIII siècle et le début du XIVe [7]. Paléographiquement, il est similaire aux autres codices transcrits par des notables pisans détenus dans les geôles gênoises suite à la bataille de la Meloria. Parmi ces oeuvres cearcérales, outre le célèbre cas du Milione de Marco Polo, on trouve également un des témoins les plus importants de la Legenda aurea de Jacques de Voragine, le ms. M 76 sup. de la Biblioteca Ambrosiana, transcrit justement dans les prisons de Gênes entre 1292 (année où Jacques est devenu archevêque : l'incipit cite expressément cette charge) et 1298, année où les prisonniers ont été libérés [8].
Le ms. de la Biblioteca Cateriniana est donc un témoin de grande imortance, puisqu'il a été produit en un temps et un lieu qui coincident avec la biographie de Jacques : il est dont très probable que le texte reporte un texte ‘faisant autorité' (ou soit très proche d'un texte ‘faisant autorité') [9].

Pourquoi ne pas s'arrêter à la transcription des manuscrits de référence ?

La collation de l'édition Clutius avec un bon manuscrit est sans aucun doute une chose précieuse et un pas important dans notre connaissance. Ne serait-ce que cela, il s'agit d'un excellent moyen de dénicher les éventuelles interpolations du XVe siècle dans notre texte. Mais, puisque nos manuscrits de référence eux-mêmes ne sont rien d'autre que des témoins (et sont donc caractérisés par certaines erreurs propres), en cas d'une discordance entre l'édition Clutius [=c] et notre référence [=P], sauf cas exceptionnels, il n'est donc pas possible d'établir immédiatement si (a) P a raison et c a un texte corrompu ; (b) c a raison et P a un texte corrompu ; c et P ont ensemble un texte corrompu, et la leçon authentique doit être cherchée ailleurs.
En second lieu, la collation de P et c peut seulement mettre en évidence certaines corruptions du texte, celles de P vs. c ω (où par ω on entend le texte original) ou celles de c vs. P ω. La collation au contraire n'est pas en mesure de mettre en évidence (à part de rarissimes erreurs patentes) les cas où P et c coïncident dans la corruption contre ω.

Une liste des loci critici

Après la première phase de la collation du manuscrit de référence il est donc possible de dresser une liste des loci critici, en d'autres termes d'identifier les sermons où l'on discerne la possibilité que puissent se retrouver des erreurs particulièrement significatives : en jargon lachmannien, on parle de classifier les témoins selon le témoignage des fautes conjonctives (qui ne peuvent être produites indépendamment et qui attestent donc une parenté) ou séparatives (qui ne peuvent être corrigées indépendamment et qui excluent donc une possible dépendance). Les témoins les plus significatifs peuvent donc être étudiés dans cette perspective.

Reconstruction des lignes générales de la tradition manuscrite

Après les deux premières phases il est donc possible de chercher à délimiter les lignes générales de la tradition manuscrite et de chercher à insérer chacun des témoins dans ce cadre. On peut lors de cette étape évaluer la fiabilité des témoins considérés et décider d'élargir ou non ultérieurement le champ de la recherche en vue de l'édition du texte.

L'édition critique

L'édition critique proprement dite sera conduite sur la base de quelques manuscrits sélectionnés selon trois critères : (a) l'absence de corruptions patentes communes dans les loci critici ; (b) l'ancienneté ; (c) l'aire géographique d'appartenance.

L'interaction avec l'indexation du Thesaurus

La phase 1 (les étoiles = les passages douteux de l'édition Clutius)

Le travail d'édition croise en deux endroits le laborieux chemin de la classification du Thesaurus sur le site www.sermones.net.
Le premier suit immédiatement la collation du ms. de référence : chaque différence notable entre le ms. P peut être signalée, de façon que les lecteurs du Thesaurus sachent qu'ils se trouvent face à un passage douteux, qui n'est pas attesté de façon concordante par la tradition manuscrite. Bien entendu, il s'agit de passages dont l'authenticité est mise en doute, non de passages assurément corrompus : seule l'édition pourra définir si le manuscrit P a raison, ou Clutius, ou bien aucun des deux. Les passages douteux sont indiqués dans le texte à cette phase par une étoile clignotante (*).

La phase 2 (la couleur rouge = les passages corrompus de l'édition Clutius)

Une fois achevé le travail d'édition, il sera en revanche possible de signaler en rouge les corruptions particulièrement significatives de l'édition Clutius. Le mariage heureux entre la vieille philologie (capable de juger la fiabilité d'un texte, mais pas en mesure de fournir les instruments plus économiques pour sa consultation) et les nouvelles techniques éditoriales (qui peuvent rendre un texte accessible, mais ne peuvent en évaluer la valeur philologique), a été ainsi célébré.

Obiettivi

Valutare l'affidabilità dell'edizione Clutius

Il progetto di ricerca filologica sulle raccolte dei sermoni De sanctis [= DS] e De tempore [= DT] di Iacopo de Voragine nasce con un obiettivo primario, ovvero la valutazione dell'affidabilità dell'edizione Clutius, la forma testuale oggetto di classificazione nel Thesaurus.
Non è un compito facile. Si tratta di affrontare un testo lungo (dai 150 ai 350 folia manoscritti) e tràdito da centinaia di manoscritti. Inoltre vi è l'opportunità di elaborare un metodo filologico non convenzionale, dovuto appunto alla necessità di arrivare in tempi relativamente brevi a un giudizio di affidabilità dell'edizione Clutius e di affrontare un campo di indagine particolarmente vasto.

Definire un testo critico

Si tratta dunque di un lavoro impegnativo, ma proprio l'entità e la qualità del lavoro necessario per valutare criticamente l'edizione Clutius porta alle soglie di un obiettivo più ambizioso e raggiungibile grazie ai dati raccolti ed elaborati in questa prima fase di lavoro: l'edizione critica del testo dei sermones De sanctis e De tempore.

Il metodo filologico

Le macrovarianti

La valutazione dell'affidabilità dell'edizione Clutius deve considerare due aspetti principali : (a) le macrovarianti del testo, ossia i sermoni inclusi nelle raccolte, il numero dei quali può variare anche considerevolmente in ciascun testimone (così come nelle diverse edizioni a stampa) [1]; (b) le microvarianti del testo, ossia parole e passaggi all'interno di ciascun sermone.
Il primo aspetto, la valutazione dell'affidabilità del Clutius per quanto riguarda l'autenticità dei sermoni assenti nell'edizione Clutius, o nella catalogazione dello Schneyer o in entrambe, può avvalersi delle caratteristiche proprie del metodo di lavoro di Iacopo de Voragine, che ha utilizzato sempre lo stesso repertorio di immagini e di figure retoriche, di distinctiones e di metafore, per la composizione di ciascun sermone. [2]

La testimonianza dei manoscritti più antichi

Il primo passo per la valutazione dell'autenticità delle macrovarianti è stato verificare quanti e quali sermoni fossero presenti nello stadio più antico della tradizione manoscritta. Per la raccolta De tempore non ci sono problemi. Lo stesso Iacopo scrive nella sua prefazione di aver raccolto tre sermoni per ogni domenica e questo ha limitato l'intraprendenza di chi avrebbe potuto aggiungere o togliere e ha anche agevolato la nostra attività filologica. Diverso è stato il caso dei Sermones de sanctis, nella cui tradizione manoscritta sono stati trovati dieci sermoni dubbi, che erano presenti in alcuni testimoni più antichi, ma non nell'edizione Clutius o nel repertorio Schneyer, e si è rilevata in un testimone (Firenze, Bibl. Medicea Laurenziana, Plut. 32 sin. 4-5) una sostanziale differenza di contenuto che poneva ovvi problemi riguardanti un eventuale diversa redazione (o della composizione di una raccolta in ogni caso ‘diversa') e della sua autenticità.

La struttura dei sermoni dubbi

Nei sermoni dubbi e nel testo della raccolta fiorentina è però possibile riconoscere lo stesso usus scribendi di Iacopo de Voragine: le metafore, le distinctiones, le etimologie, le figure retoriche, le citazioni delle fonti provengono dalla stessa ‘scatola degli utensili' da cui provengono gli elementi costitutivi dei sermoni ritenuti autentici, per essere concordemente presenti nella tradizione manoscritta o per essere stati oggetto di un lavoro ecdotico (è il caso dei Sermones Quadragesimales e del materiale omiletico presente nella Legenda aurea).

Risultati: autenticità dei sermoni e riconoscimento di due diverse raccolte De sanctis di Iacopo de Voragine

Grazie alla verifica del contenuto dei testimoni più antichi è stato così possibile (a) riconoscere l'autenticità dei sermoni dubbi presenti nella tradizione manoscritta più antica e (b) riconoscere che esistono due diverse raccolte De sanctis di Iacopo de Voragine, secondo quanto Iacopo stesso aveva scritto nella sua Chronica Ianuensis. I recenti studi di Dorothée Servera Barbiche [3] hanno confermato questi risultati, proponendo diverse interessanti prospettive per il proseguo delle ricerche sulla datazione e sull'impostazione di questa seconda raccolta.

Le microvarianti

I manoscritti di riferimento

Diversa è la questione delle microvarianti del testo. La questione dell'autenticità di ciascuna lezione deve fare i conti con la necessità di giungere a un giudizio critico senza attendere un'ipotetica collazione (peraltro impossibile, visti i limiti della vita umana) di tutti i testimoni per tutto il testo. Si è quindi elaborato un processo filologico che in quattro fasi può portare a un'edizione critica, sfruttando i risultati intermedi per poter utilmente affiancare la classificazione del Thesaurus e per poter aver fin dai primi passi dell'indagine una valutazione anche superficiale sull'edizione Clutius. Le quattro fasi prevedono: (a) l'identificazione di una sorta di bon manuscrit che possa essere utilizzato come punto di riferimento (ed esemplare di collazione) nei confronti dell'edizione Clutius; (b) la collazione del Clutius e del ms. di riferimento, con la conseguente compilazione di una lista di capitoli campione e di loci critici, identificati sulla base delle varianti più significative riconosciute durante la collazione; (c) la definizione di alcune linee generali della tradizione manoscritta, ricostruite attraverso la collazione nei loci critici di cinque testimoni scelti per antichità e area geografica di provenienza; (d) l'edizione critica vera e propria.

De sanctis: ms. Paris, BnF, lat. 15949

Il ms. lat. 15949 della BnF di Parigi è un testimone di grandi dimensioni (mm. 335 x 225), formato da due parti contemporanee rilegate insieme. La prima parte riporta la raccolta dei sermoni De tempore di Iacopo de Voragine, preceduta da una tavola degli incipit e da due tabulae distinctionum. La seconda parte attesta la raccolta De sanctis, preceduta anch'essa da una tavola delle distinzioni.con un incipit:

Incipiunt distinctiones super festiuos sermones Iacobi Ianuensis secundum ordinem alphabeticum quas compilauit quidam studens in domo de sorbona orate pro eo et explicit: Expliciunt theumata sermonum de sanctis fraris Iacobi Ianuensis archiepiscopi de ordine fratrum predicatorum et sunt in numero CCC et XVII.

Il ms. è stato donato alla Sorbona da Gerardo d'Utrecht [4], come attesta una nota finale :

Due scribi si sono alternati nella ricopiatura. [5] Il secondo ha trascritto per lo stesso Gerardo d'Utrecht anche una parte del ms. lat. 15966 della BnF. E poiché il ms. 15966 è stato copiato nel 1319, anche questo testimone non può essere cronologicamente molto distante.
Questo testimone presenta due motivi di interesse. Il primo è che il testo è stato classificato per allegoriae, exempla, distinctiones, probationes e testimonia l'utilizzazione ‘pratica' di queste raccolte, la cui consultazione era facilitata dalle tavole preliminari : [6] c'è un sistema di riferimenti attraverso cui le tabulae rimandano alle lettere trascritte in margine a ciascun sermone. Il secondo è che per la ricopiatura sono stati utilizzati diversi testimoni al fine di realizzare un testo migliore, come mostrano le note marginali precedute dalla parola alias. Si tratta dunque di un'opera filologica ante litteram, che dispone anche di una sorta di apparato sui generis.
Il testo (che consta di 317 sermoni) non è completo : i sermoni 580, 581 e 581a, ovvero gli ultimi sermoni de commemoratione mortuorum, sono stati omessi.

De tempore: ms. Pisa, Bibl. Cateriniana, 147

Il ms. di Pisa, Biblioteca Cathariniana 147 è databile tra la fine del XIII secolo e l'inizio del XIV. [7] Paleograficamente è affine ad altri codici trascritti da notabili pisani detenuti nelle carceri genovesi in seguito alla battaglia della Meloria. Tra queste opere carcerarie, oltre al celebre caso del Milione di Marco Polo, vi è anche uno dei testimoni più importanti della Legenda aurea di Iacopo de Voragine, il ms. M 76 sup. della Biblioteca Ambrosiana, trascritto appunto nelle carceri di Genova tra il 1292 (anno in cui Iacopo divenne arcivescovo: l'incipit cita espressamente questa carica) e il 1298, anno del rilascio dei prigionieri. [8]
Il ms. Cateriniano è dunque un testimone di grande importanza, poiché è stato prodotto in tempi e luoghi coincidenti con la biografia di Iacopo: che il codice riporti un testo ‘autorevole' (o sia molto vicino a un testo ‘autorevole') è dunque molto probabile. [9]

Perché non fermarsi alla trascrizione dei manoscritti di riferimento?

La collazione dell'edizione Clutius con un bon manuscrit è senza dubbio una cosa preziosa e un importante passo avanti nelle nostre conoscenze. Se non altro, è un buon modo per snidare delle eventuali interpolazioni del XV secolo nel nostro testo. Ma, poiché anche i nostri manocritti di riferimento non sono nient'altro che dei testimoni (e sono caratterizzati quindi da alcuni errori propri). In caso di una discordanza tra l'edizione Clutius [=c] e il nostro riferimento [=P], salvo casi eccezionali, non è quindi possibile stabilire immediatamente se (a) ha ragione P e c ha un testo corrotto; (b) ha ragione c e P ha un testo corrotto; c e P hanno entrambi un testo corrotto, e la lezione autentica va cercata altrove.
In secondo luogo, la collazione tra P e c può solo evidenziare alcune corruttele del testo quelle di P vs.c ω (laddove con ω si intende il testo originale) o quelle di c vs. P ω. La collazione non è invece in grado di evidenziare (a parte rarissimi errori patenti) i casi in cui P e c coincidono in corruttela contro ω.

Un elenco di loci critici

Dopo la prima fase della collazione del ms. di riferimento è dunque possibile stilare una lista di loci critici, in altre parole identificare quei sermoni dove si è riconosciuta la possibilità che vi si possano ritrovare errori particolarmente significativi: in gergo lachmanniano si tratta di classificare i testimoni secondo l'attestazione di errori congiuntivi (che non possono essersi prodotti indipendentemente e che quindi attestano una parentela) o separativi (che non possono essere corretti indipendentemente e che quindi escludono una possibile dipendenza). I testimoni più significativi possono essere dunque studiati in questa prospettiva.

Ricostruzione delle linee generali della tradizione manoscritta

Dopo le prime due fasi è dunque possibile cercare di delineare le linee generali della tradizione manoscritta e cercare di inserire ciascun testimone in questo quadro. Si può in questa fase valutare l'affidabilità dei testimoni considerati e decidere se allargare ulterioremente il cambo d'indagine in vista dell'edizione del testo. In ogni caso, la collazione di alcuni dei testimoni più antichi e provenienti da diverse aree di diffusione del testo può permettere di ricostruire le linee generali della tradizione del testo e di fornire una prima base per la valutazione di ciascun testimone.

L'edizione critica

L'edizione critica verrà condotta sulla base di alcuni codici selezionati secondo tre criteri: (a) l'assenza di patenti corruttele comuni nei loci critici; (b) l'antichità; (c) l'area geografica di appartenenza.

L'interazione con la classificazione del Thesaurus

La fase 1 (le stelle = i passaggi dubbi dell'edizione Clutius)

Il lavoro di edizione incrocia il laborioso cammino della classificazione del Thesaurus sul sito www.sermones.net in due punti.
Il primo è immediatamente successivo alla collazione del ms. di riferimento: ogni differenza notevole tra il ms. P può venire segnalata, in modo che chi consulta il Thesarus sappia che si trova di fronte a un passo dubbio, non concordemente attestato dalla tradizione manoscritta. Beninteso, si tratta di passi la cui autenticità è messa in dubbio, non di passi sicuramente corrotti: sarà solo l'edizione a poter definire se ha ragione il manoscritto P, o il Clutius, oppure nessuno dei due. I passaggi dubbi sono indicati nel testo in questa fase da una stella luminosa (*).

La fase 2 (il colore rosso = i passaggi corrotti dell'edizione Clutius)

Ultimato il lavoro di edizione è invece possibile segnalare in rosso le corruttele particolarmente significative dell'edizione Clutius. Il felice connubio tra la vecchia filologia (capace di giudicare l'affidabilità di un testo, ma non in grado di fornire gli strumenti più economici per la sua consultazione) e le nuove tecniche editoriali (che possono rendere un testo accessibile, ma non possono valutarne il valore filologico), è stato così celebrato.

Indien gij trouw blijft aan mijn woord, zijt gij waarlijk mijn leerlingen en dan zult ge de waarheid kennen (Joh. 8,31).

De waarheid zal U bevrijden. Toen sommige Joden tot het geloof bekeerd waren, wou de Heer hen in het ontvangen geloof bevestigen en hij spoorde hen aan om Zijn woord ijverig te onderhouden en toen waren zij echte leerlingen. In de voorgaande woorden worden twee (zaken) aangeraakt. Ten eerste : God spoort hen aan om Zijn woord te onderhouden, als Hij zegt : indien hij trouw blijft aan mijn woord ; ten tweede toont Hij de drievoudige werkzaamheid van het onderhouden van het woord aan, als Hij zegt : dan zullen jullie mijn leerlingen zijn.

Betreffende het eerste valt te noteren dat het heel nuttig is om Gods woord te onderhouden.
Want, zoals Ambrosius zegt in Beati Immacultati, heeft het woord Gods een drievoudige kracht. Het is namelijk ontvlambaar, verlichtend en reinigend.

Ten eerste : de ontvlambare kracht. Indien een mens koud is in zijn liefde tot God, ontvlamt het woord Gods hem, aangezien het vuur is. Want zijn mijn woorden niet als vuur (Jer. 23,29) zegt de Heer. Uw vurige rede is fel ; uw knecht vereert het in liefde (Ps 118,140). Ieder woord van God is door het vuur gelouterd (Spr., 30,5). Zo waren zij ontvlamd die zeiden : Brandde ons hart niet in ons, terwijl Hij onderweg met ons sprak ? (Luc. 24,32).

Ten tweede heeft het verhelderende kracht. Indien immers een mens onwetend is of hij twijfelt aan (zijn) geloof, dan verlicht het woord Gods hem, aangezien het licht is. Een lamp voor mijn voet is uw woord (Ps 118,105). Het bevel van de Heer is een lamp en de wet is licht.

Ten derde heeft het een reinigende kracht. Indien een mens door bepaalde ondeugden besmet is, dan reinigt het woord Gods hem, daar het hemels water is. Ik zal u met zuiver water besprenkelen en ge zult rein worden van al uw ongerechtigheden (Ezech. 36,25). Gij zijt al rein dankzij het woord dat Ik tot u gesproken heb (Joh. 15,3).

Maar, indien het woord Gods (de kracht) heeft om te ontvlammen, te verhelderen en te reinigen, waarom dan worden diegenen die de woorden van God horen niet meteen ontvlamd, verlicht en gereinigd ? Hierover moet gezegd worden dat, ofschoon de woorden van God vuur zijn, toch velen niet kunnen ontvlammen omdat zij tussen zichzelf en dit vuur een schot opwerpen en de zonde oprichten als een ijzeren muur. Neen, Jahwe's hand is niet te kort om te redden. Maar uw misdaden brengen een scheiding te weeg tussen u en God. Door uw zonden is Zijn gelaat voor u omhuld en hoort Hij u niet (Jes. 59,1-2). Door uw zonde wordt gij een loszittend stuk aan een hoge vestigingsmuur dat eensklaps en onverwachts omlaag valt (Jes. 30,13). Velen immers, die de woorden van God moeten verlichten, worden niet verlicht, omdat zij dit licht niet benaderen, maar zich integendeel verwijderen. Want zoals gezegd wordt, aangezien zij naderen met hun voeten, zullen zij Zijn leer aanvaarden (Deut. 33,3). Treed hen nader en wordt verlicht (Ps 33,6). Talrijk zijn zij, die, ofschoon de woorden van God (hen) moeten reinigen, daar zij hemels water zijn, toch niet gereinigd worden omdat hun ziel naar de aarde gekeerd is. Want, zoals Augustinus zegt, ieder is zoals zijn voorkeur : als je de aarde liefhebt, ben je aarde ; als je God liefhebt, ben je God. Zoals immers bakstenen niet gewassen worden door water, maar meer vervuild worden, zo vergaat het diegenen die naar de aarde gekeerd zijn. Zij werden een gruwel, net als hun geliefde (Hos. 9,10).

Ten tweede wordt de werkzaamheid van het woord Gods aangetoond. Deze is drievoudig.
Ten eerste omdat de woorden van God de mens tot leerling van God maken, heeft Hij toegevoegd : Dan zult gij waarlijk mijn leerlingen zijn. Wanneer de mens het woord Gods graag beluistert, is dit een teken dat hij een leerling van Christus is. Wie uit God is, luistert naar Gods woorden (Joh. 8,47). Een ander teken is dat de leerling van Christus elke ongeoorloofde liefde afwijst en elke goddelijke liefde verlangt. De ongeoorloofde liefde is evenwel drievoudig, nl. huiselijk, aards en vleselijk. (Deze liefde) is huiselijk wanneer iemand op een ongeoorloofde wijze zijn familieleden bemint. Zij is vleselijk, wanneer iemand zijn dierlijkheden en vleselijkheden bemint. (Zij is) aards, wanneer iemand al te veel de aardse dingen liefheeft. Deze drie liefdes moet de leerling van Christus verwerpen. Als iemand naar Mij toekomt die zijn vader en zijn moeder niet haat [dit verwijst naar de huiselijke liefde], ja, zelfs zijn eigen leven niet haat [en dit verwijst naar de vleselijke liefde] en niet alles achterlaat wat hij bezit, kan hij mijn leerling niet zijn (Luc. 14,26). De leerlingen van Christus moeten evenwel de geestelijke en goddelijke liefde hebben, die bestaat uit de liefde voor God en de naaste. Hieruit zullen allen kunnen opmaken dat gij mijn leerlingen zijt : als gij de liefde onder elkaar bewaart (Joh. 13,35).

De tweede werkzaamheid van het woord Gods is dat zij die de woorden van God onderhouden, de waarheid Gods kennen, zoals gezegd wordt : En gij zult de waarheid kennen (Joh. 8,32). Zoals Augustinus zegt, de waarheid is het tegengestelde van de valsheid, de dubbelzinnigheid en de ijdelheid. Wat waar is, is niet vals, niet dubbelzinnig, niet ijdel. De woorden van God doen ons in de wereld de waarheid herkennen, omdat zij ons doen weten dat alle wereldlijke dingen vals, dubbelzinnig en ijdel zijn.

Valse zaken immers zijn, dat de wereld verzadiging in rijkdom belooft en ledigheid geeft, zoals duidelijk blijkt (in het verhaal van) de rijke die tot zoveel ledigheid verviel dat hij zelfs geen druppel water kon hebben. In andere zaken belooft (de wereld) genot en geeft zij bitterheid. Van honing druipen de lippen van de vreemde vrouw, maar haar eind is zo bitter als alsem (Spr. 5,3-4). (De wereld) belooft een verheffing in de eerbetuigingen, maar geeft een onmiddellijke afwijzing. Zij zingen bij tamboerijn en citer, vermaken zich met muziek en fluit. En eerst na een leven in geluk gesleten dalen zij af naar het dodenrijk (Job 21 ; 12-13). Gij licht mij op, sleurt mij mee op de wind en schudt mij heen en weer in de storm (Job 30,22).

Ten tweede, deze wereldlijke (zaken) zijn dubbelzinnig en gemengd. In de wereld immers is niets puur, maar alles is gemengd. Uw wijn is met water gemengd (Jes. 1,22). Zo is de vreugde vermengd met pijn, de wijsheid is vermengd met vergetelheid, de gezondheid met ziekte, het leven is vermengd met de dood. In het huidige leven zijn deze (zaken) vermengd, maar in het zalige leven zijn ze puur, in de hel zijn ze weerzinwekkend. God zal immers de pijn van de vreugde scheiden, de vergetelheid van de wijsheid, de ziekte van de gezondheid, de dood van het leven. En alle ontlasting, met name de pijn, de vergetelheid, de ziekte en de dood werpt hij in de hel. Voor de heiligen zullen alle (zaken) allerzuiverst blijven, namelijk de vreugde zonder pijn, de wijsheid zonder vergetelheid, de gezondheid zonder ziekte, het leven zonder dood.

Ten derde, deze wereldse (zaken) zijn ijdel : ze zijn ijdel in hun oorsprong, daar ze uit niets zijn. (Ze zijn ijdel) in het midden, daar ze onderhevig zijn aan vele wisselvalligheden. (Ze zijn ijdel) in hun einde, omdat ze spoedig tot niets terugkeren. Alles is ijdel [dit verwijst naar de ijdelheid in het midden] ; ze zijn voortgekomen uit stof [dit verwijst naar de ijdelheid in de oorsprong] en keren terug tot stof [dit verwijst naar de ijdelheid aan het einde] (Pred. 3,19-20).

De derde werkzaamheid van het woord Gods, is dat zij die de woorden van God dienen, de volledige vrijheid bereiken. En daarom voegde hij toe : En de waarheid zal u bevrijden. Zij hebben immers de vrijheid van ziel bij het betichten en in het niet-zondigen. Zij stellen immers vrijelijk de ondeugden van de machtigen aan de kaak. Hij heeft in zijn dagen voor geen heerser gebeefd en niemand is sterker geweest dan hij (Sir. 48,12). Deze vrijheid van ziel hadden ook de filosofen, en daarom antwoordde de filosoof Diogenes, toen hij Alexander (de Grote) betichtte en deze laatste zich beriep op zijn macht : uw macht en uw glorie zijn voorbij, of toekomstig of actueel. Hetgeen voorbij is, vrees ik niet, daar het er reeds niet meer is. Het toekomstige vrees ik niet, daar dit twijfelachtig en onzeker is. Aan het actuele hecht ik weinig waarde, daar het vluchtig is en in een oogopslag verdwenen is. Diezelfden hebben de vrijheid van ziel om niet te zondigen, omdat ze zichzelf te goed vinden om slaven te zijn van de zonde. Augustinus : de zondaar is de slaaf van zoveel heren als (hij) ondeugden (heeft). Bijgevolg antwoordde (Diogenes) aan Alexander toen deze verklaarde aan voornoemde filosoof dat hij de heerser van de wereld was : jij bent helemaal niet de heerser, maar je bent de slaaf van mijn slaven. De hoogmoed is immers mijn slavin en jouw meesteres. De wellust is mijn slavin en jouw meesteres. Deze (ondeugden) vertrap ik onder mijn voeten en zij heersen over jou. Bijgevolg ben jij de slaaf van mijn slavinnen. Toen de dienaren van Alexander zich op hem wilden storten, zei Alexander : Zorg ervoor dat hem niets overkomt, want hij is de slaaf van God en hij spreekt de waarheid.

Voor de bijbelvertalingen is de Willibrord-vertaling gebruikt, behalve daar waar deze te veel afweek van de Latijnse tekst.

Reception of Voragine's sermons in Central Europe – a few examples

Frequently sermon collections were compiled of model sermons by various authors, the primary criterion being utility of the copied texts. It is not surprising that widespread sermons by authors like Voragine appeared in collections side by side with model sermons and texts by other popular sermon authors or anonymous texts; this is the case of a number of codices from the region of Central Europe as well.

Different case is the use of parts of Voragine's model sermons, i.e. distinctiones , in newly written models and sermons. Diffusion and general knowlegde of Voragine's works were the prerequisites for this. In the fifteenth century, and especially in its second half, Voragine's models were so widespread and well-known that distinctiones based on his sermons appeared as integral parts of manuscript sermon texts.

Scholars noticed that already Peregrinus of Opole (ca. 1260-1333) had probably known and made use of some Voragine's homiletic models (and not only the legends) in terms of structural schemes and content of his sermons. For example, Peregrinus' sermon for Nativity depended mainly on Voragine's sermon and partially on the Legenda aurea (but he could have taken some material also from the Historia scholastica or the sermons of Pope Leo). Wolny maintained that although the content of the sermon depended on Voragine, Peregrinus' selection and composition of motifs was original.1

Franz Adolph pointed out some textual analogies between the sermons from Voragine's model collections and the so-called Greculus sermon collection. He noticed that the First Sermon for the First Advent Sunday in Greculus had almost the same three-part structure as the Second Sermon for the First Advent Sunday in Voragine's de tempore collection, only substituting the word amicum for Voragine's principem . Greculus made also use of other Voragine's Advent sermons. In the rest of the sermon collection the use of Voragine is less frequent and it is completely absent from the Lent sermons, Adolph maintains.2

In the second half of the fifteenth century an author of a sermon for the feast of St Stanislaus of Cracow, a Polish martyr bishop, knew and incorporated whole divisions from Voragine's model sermon collections into his own composition [Budapest University Library, Cod. Lat. 75, f. 450-451]. Interestingly, in this case the author did not take the material from a sermon for either the same liturgical occasion (which was a frequent pattern, but anyway was not possible in the case of St Stanislaus) or for an analogical liturgical locus (e.g. a feast of another martyr bishop). The author took the material from the models that were seemingly very distant in content from the feast of St Stanislaus. Nevertheless, the selected passages fitted very well into the author's intentions. In one part of his sermon he chose to speak about the ways St Stanislaus imitated Christ in the sanctity of his life, in his death and in his suffering. He found the useful passages in two various sermon models, one in Voragine's de tempore and another in his quadragesimale .

The material inspired by Voragine forms only one part of this sermon's complex structure. The divisio thematis determines the main structure of the sermon texts as follows: first part deals with the dignity of the saint's office, the second section with the sanctity of Stanislaus' life; the third main structural part of the sermon text elaborates on the topic of the saint's beatitude and his home in heaven ( excelsior celis factus ). The discussion of the ways St Stanislaus imitated Christ inspired by Voragine's models appeared in this final part of the sermon. When speaking of the analogies with Christ's passion, the author first listed the heritage that Christ divided in his spiritual testament to various people – a similar list is to be found in the sermon for Passion Sunday in Voragine's de tempore collection, but the author might have taken the motif from other sources. Then the writer summarised that while Christ divided in his testament many things as a powerful lord, St Stanislaus, being a servant, did not have so much, but gave away everything he had, his life, his body and his property. The following section on the paralells in the suffering of the saint's soul with Christ's passion built again on a passage from Voragine's First Sermon for Good Friday from Lent collection. It listed four philosophical opinions on the location of the soul in human body and then the ways the Jews struck these four places when they wanted to torment Christ's soul. The discussion of individual points in the anonymous sermon is less developed than in Voragine's text, but the parallel between the two texts is evident. The preacher added again the bridge to St Stanislaus: they tortured his soul in the identical four parts of his body: the head, the blood, the heart and the whole body.

Such use presupposes a better knowledge of Voragine, when a student of Voragine was able to recall and make use of distinctiones or sections from models for different liturgical occasions and then employ them as independent versatile units in newly composed sermons. It is a pattern similar to the functioning of distinctiones collections.

The sermon is included in a miscellaneous codex together with other widespread model sermons by Pope Gregory, Origen, Jerome, John Chrysostom and various theological treatises and aids. Various quires, which come from the period between 1467 and 1472, were bound together in the late fifteenth century. Various parts may be of Spiš (today's Slovakia) or Polish provenance; in the late fifteenth century the volume belonged to John of Keszmargt (Kežmarok in today's Slovakia), a parish priest in Menhartzdorff.1 The scribes may have been connected to the University of Cracow.

The author exploited also other sources for this sermon. He most probably knew Dominican's Peregrinus of Opole (ca. 1260-1333) sermon for the feast of the same saint.2 The author used the same liturgical thema from the Epistle to the Hebrews [Heb 7.26] Talis enim decebat ut esset nobis pontifex , which was in general not frequently used in medieval homiletics, and a similar main division, although the structure of this sermon is much more complex than the Peregrinus' one. Similarly to Peregrinus, he listed the phenomena that tested Stanislaus' sanctity and the saint's miracles in a section. Besides these sources, the preacher also made use of liturgical texts for this particular feast, esp. the historia rhytmica, quoted in the text.

The Pécs Sermones Dominicales and the Sermones de tempore of James of Varazze

The Pécs Sermones Dominicales (SD) is a fifteenth-century anonymous sermon collection from Hungary. It has been edited by Áron Szilády in 1910 (Sermones Dominicales, 2 vols. [Budapest: Magyar Tudományos Akadémia, 1910]). The language of the sermons is Latin, but each of their two extant manuscripts (Budapest, Egyetemi Könyvtár, Cod. Lat. 18; Budapest, Magyar Ferences Könyvtár és Levéltár, Esztergomi letét, Múz. 13) contain Hungarian glosses. The collection itself was most probably put together in the diocese of Pécs, in Southern Hungary, between 1450 and 1456. The compiler seems to have been a secular cleric in the mentioned diocese. The compiler's intention to produce a coherent sermonary is indicated by a preface (called exordium or prohemium in the text) and by numerous cross references between single sermons.

The SD usually offers two sermons for every Sunday: one for the Gospel and one for the epistle. In some cases there are two sermons for the Gospel, while in some others the sermon for the epistle is missing (see the table below). It also contains sermons for the Christmas feasts, Epiphany, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Ascension and Corpus Christi. Out of the altogether 127 pieces, 45 are based on James of Varazze's Sermones de tempore (see the doubly underlined items in the table below).

James' sermonary contains sermons only for the Gospels, not for the epistles; he wrote three short pieces for each Sunday interpreting three (sometimes different, sometimes identical) verses of the pericope strictly in the form of thematic sermons. In contrast, the compiler of the SD often discusses the whole pericope – which he usually quotes at full length – in the form of homilies. But only in the case of the Gospel-sermons; the Epistle-sermons are always thematic. The homily type Gospel-sermons look as if many short thematic sermons on each phrase or section of the given pericope were attached to each other. Every subsequent phrase or section of the pericope is introduced by sequitur, and followed by divisions or distinctions.

From among the 45 sermons partly borrowed from James, 21 are the combinations of two or three pieces for the corresponding (or the previous) day in the original, while the other 24 are enlarged and rearranged versions of single texts in James' sermonary. If the thema of James' sermon(s) do not fit the respective pericope in the Pécs missal, the SD introduces a thema from the latter and alters the sermon source accordingly. As to the editorial techniques of the anonymous compiler, we can differentiate four levels according to the extent of change brought to larger sections of the original texts. Thus a parallel section in the SD can be

1. almost word-for-word the same with only synonyms or short tautological explanations added which are introduced by “i.e.”;
2. structurally congruent using the same divisions and distinctions but discussing them at a considerably greater length;
3. roughly paraphrased following the same line of thought but changing divisions and distinctions as well;
4. entirely new introduced by phrases like “nota quod,” “nota consequenter,” or “notandum est.”
Since all four techniques are used in almost every sermon ultimately stemming from James, only a new critical edition of the SD could indicate the extent of the sophisticated rewritings made by our compiler or someone else between him and James.

For the time being, the following table is intended to summarize the relationship between the SD and the Sermones de tempore. It shows, first of all, the Sundays/feasts considered in the SD in comparison with James' collection and two relevant missals, those of the diocese of Pécs and the Dominican Order. The sequence of the Sundays/feasts and their names follows the SD; if a name was not indicated, I took the respective name from the Missale Quinqueecclesiense. Secondly, the table shows the Biblical themata in the SD and in the Sermones de tempore: those sermons in the SD which are based on the latter sermonary have doubly underlined themata. The source of the sermon for Nativity is not in James' Sermones de tempore but in his Sermones de sanctis (at least in the edition I used: Jacobus de Voragine, Sermones aurei et pulcherrimi. Paris: Regnault, 1533): the ninth sermon in die nativitatis Domini. The table also indicates which sermons stemming from James were restructured into homilies (H) and which were not (T). There are a few mixed cases (indicated by H/T) where only a part of the sermon interprets the pericope line by line.

‘Skin for skin, and all that a man has he will give for his life.'

According to the Gloss, skin is given for skin, because often when a blow is directed toward an eye, we put our hand to it, so as to be hurt in the hand rather than the eye, as if it were said : Job resisted exteriorly many blows, because he preferred not to be struck interiorly.

One must also note that there are four types of skin : of nature, of blame, of grace, and of glory.

The first skin is worn by all men. In regard to himself the same Job declared : ‘You dressed me with skin and with flesh.' But it is this skin that Bartholomew set aside for many reasons.

Firstly, he set it aside as a sign of fervent charity. People who suffer from excessive heat have the habit of removing their clothes. When the blessed Bartholomew set aside his skin, that fire of love that filled him was made clear. This is what is meant when it is said : ‘Jonathan loved David like his soul'. In fact he removed his tunic and he gave it to David. By Jonathan who signifies the gift of the dove, the blessed Bartholomew is signified, for he was filled by the Holy Spirit. Thus he who loved David (that is, Christ) like his soul, removed his tunic and he gave it to David when due to the love of Christ he allowed himself to be skinned alive.

Secondly, as an increase in purety. The branches of trees that have their bark removed appear more white. In the same way Bartholomew, stripped of the skin of mortality, became more pure of spirit. One reads in this regard : ‘He has pulled the bark off my fig tree [that is, Bartholomew, who had was humble, productive and sweet], making it naked he stripped it bare' and so on, ‘its branches were made white'. And : ‘Remove the rust from silver, and a most pure vessel will come forth'.

Thirdly, in the hope of future immortality. In fact, man happily strips himself of his old clothes, in order to wear gold-coloured clothes. Likewise Bartholomew truly desired to strip off the clothes of his mortality, because he knew he would be adorned with the clothes of immortality. ‘The queen stands up [that is, the soul that directs the body well] on the right in golden clothes [that is in the glorified body]. The king ordered Jonathan to remove his clothes and to dress in purple [that is the glorified body, which will result after the general resurrection].

Fourthly, he set aside his skin in the odor of beauty. According to the ancient law, the high priest would remove the skin from the offering, and set fire to it as an offering to the Lord, creating a most beautiful scent. Thus was the skin removed from the blessed Bartholomew who, enflamed by charity, was sacrificed to God and produced a most beautiful scent. ‘He has tested them like gold in the fire, and he has received them like the sacrifice of the offering.'

The second skin under discussion is that of blame, and it is threefold.

One is that worn by the sensuous, which is the old skin : ‘He has made my skin old'. It is said that sensuousness is old, as it quickly leads man to old age, as the man immersed in this vice ages within himself until he dies : ‘I have aged among all my enemies', etc., such that, as she is herself a stinking mud, she makes man filthy and old : ‘Every woman who fornicates shall be trod upon like a turd in the road.'

Another is that worn by the proud, and this skin is inflated by the wind. ‘Ephraim feeds upon the wind.' Augustine : ‘O skin that is inflated ! Why are you stretched ? As it is inflated by the wind, it will burst once it is pricked.' ‘Remember that my life is but wind' (that is, a simple burst will make it move from here to there). ‘O my God, make them like a wheel, and as straw before the wind', and just as quickly it is cast upon the ground. ‘You have raised me and as if you have placed me before the wind you have totally dashed me.'

Another is that worn by the miserly, and this is a black skin : ‘if the Ethiopian can change his skin', etc. ; And the miser takes on a bodily black, because to make money he burns day and night, and he is punished by freezing : ‘Our skin is burned like an oven'. The miser also takes on a spiritual blackness because, like avarice, it is mud, and the soul immersed in mud becomes black. ‘Woe to he who multiplies that which is not his, and who accumulates a thick mud against him'.

Bartholomew did not wear this triple skin, because he hated worldly goods, he fled honours, and he maintained a true chastity.

The third skin is that of grace which is worn by the just when they imitate Christ's life. In effect, Christ is adorned with a skin that is a white, red and chosen way of living. ‘My beloved is white and red, chosen out of thousands'. ‘He shall be neither sad nor troubled', hence the whiteness. ‘Among those who hated peace I was a peacemaker', thus the redness, and peaceful in certain charity. ‘Learn from me that I am sweet and humble of heart', here is that which supersedes all else. Bartholomew was covered with this skin, for his way of life was happy, peaceful and sweet. This is why it is said in his legend : ‘He persevered, always of the same disposition, and happy and joyful in his soul.'

The fourth skin is that of the glory of which the saints are dressed. This is why one reads the sanctuary was covered by three types of skin : some red, some violet, and ash-coloured sacks, which were made from the skins of goats. It was also covered by great black, but beautiful, skins. ‘I am black but beautiful, daughters of Jerusalem, like the skins of king Solomon.' The saints, thus, have worn a beautiful skin in the brightness of their bodies : ‘He was given splendid white linen to cover himself.' Of violet skin in subtlety : these skins in effect are of the colour of the air. In fact the bodies of the saints that are presently large and heavy will become as subtle as the air. ‘An animal body is sown, a spiritual body rises'. They are dress of skin reddened in immortality. This colour is in effect very bright ; this is why one commonly says of ruddy men : ‘He is very much alive'. ‘The just will live for all time.' Of goat skin in its agility, which makes the saints like a flash of lightning : ‘Will you send lightning ?' The saints, in their agility, are also compared to a cloud and to a flying spark : ‘The clouds file past in their magnificence. Like the spark out of the fire they fly.' They are also compared to fast-flying birds. Birds fly quickly when they have many feathers, a light body and are aided by the wind. Similarly the saints will be covered by the feathers of virtue, they will have a light and glorious body, and they will be supported by the Holy Spirit. ‘There where the breath of spirit was, they advanced.'

As well, one can say the skin signifies three things : either temporal goods — ‘On your tunic you have worn a cloak' — or mortal life — ‘God made tunics of skin for Adam and his wife' — or that which covers the body — ‘You have dressed me with skin and flesh'. Saint Bartholomew, thus, gave the goods of this world for the substantial goods of heaven : ‘If you want to be perfect, go and sell what you have, give it to the poor (and follow me).' He also gave his temporal life for the perpetual and glorious life : ‘He who hates his life in this world (will keep it in eternal life). And he gave his bodily skin for the glorified body : ‘It is the Saviour who awaits us, Our Lord Jesus Christ.'

If you are faithful to my word, you will truly be my disciples and you will know the truth (Ioan. 8, 31).

The truth will set you free (=Ioan. 8, 31). As some Jews had been converted to the faith, the Lord, wanting to confirm them in the faith they had received, exhorts them to follow his word carefully, because only then would they be true disciples. In the words noted above, there are two points: first, the Lord exhorts them to observe his word, when he says: ‘if you are faithful to my word'; secondly, he indicates the three-fold efficacity of the word, when he says: ‘you will truly be my disciples'.

On the first point, it must be noted that it is most useful to observe the word of God. For, according to what Ambrose says concerning the Sermon on the Mount, the word of God has a triple power: it enflames, it illuminates, it purifies.

Firstly, it has the power to enflame: in effect, if a man is cold in his love of God, the word of God enflames him, for it is of fire. ‘Are not my words like fire?' (Ier. 23, 29), says the Lord. ‘Your word of fire, vehement, and your servant has loved it (Psal. 118). ‘Every word of God is of fire' (Prou. 18). They were thus enflamed, those who said: ‘Was not our heart burning within us when he spoke to us on the road (Luc. 24, 32)?'

Secondly, it has the power to illuminate: if indeed man is ignorant or doubtful in his faith, the word of God, as if it were light, illuminates him. ‘Your word is a lamp unto my feet' (Psal. 118). God's commandment is a lamp, and his law is light.

Thirdly, it has the power to purify. If a man is infected by vices, the word of God purifies him, as it is a water that has come from the sky. ‘I will pour on you a water that is pure, and will be purified of all your stains' (Ezech. 36, 25). ‘From now on you are now pure, thanks to the word that I have pronounced to you' (Ioan. 15,3).

But if the word of God must inflame, enlighten and purify, then why are not those who hear God's words inflamed, enlightened and purified? To this, it must be said that even though God's words are of fire, they cannot inflame many people who put a separation between them and the fire, and make their sin into a wall of iron. ‘Now the hand of the Lord has not been made small such that it cannot bring salvation, but it is your iniquities that have made a separation between you and your God; and your sins have hidden his face so completely that he does not hear you' (Isai. 59, 1–2). ‘This iniquity will be for you like a breach that threatens ruin, making a hole through a high wall' (Isai. 30, 13). There are many who, taking the word of God like a light to illuminate them, remain nonetheless unenlightened because they do not approach this light, but distance themselves too much. As it is said: ‘they that approach his feet, shall receive his teaching' (Deut. 32). ‘Go unto him and be enlightened' (Psal. 32). There are many who, although the words of God should purify them, since they are water from heaven, are not purified because their spirit is turned toward the ground. For, as Augustine declares, each and every person is the image of his love: if you love the ground, you are the ground; if you love God, you are God. Just as bricks are not washed with water, but rather are stained by it, the same goes for those who turn toward the ground. ‘They have become abominable, like those things that they loved' (Osee 9, 10).

Secondly, there is indicated the efficacity of the word of God, which is threefold.

Firstly, this is because the words of God make man the disciple of Christ; this is why He adds: ‘You will truly be my disciples'. The sign that a man is a disciple of Christ is that he willingly hears His word: ‘He who is of God hears the word of God' (Ioan. 8, 47). Another sign is that the disciple of Christ refuses all illicit love, and desires all divine love. Illicit love, in effect, is threefold: it is domestic, worldly and carnal. It is domestic when someone loves his family in evil. It is carnal when someone loves that which is animal and carnal within oneself. It is worldly, when someone loves the things of this world too much. The disciple of Christ must reject these three types of love. ‘If anyone comes to me, and hates not his father and his mother [this refers to domestic love], even his own life [and this refers to carnal love], and does not renounce all that he possesses, he cannot be my disciple [and this refers to worldly love]' (Luc. 14, 26). However, disciples of Christ must have spiritual and divine love that consists in loving God and one's neighbour. ‘By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another' (Ioan. 13, 35).

The second efficacity of the word of God is that those who observe the words of God know the truth of God; this is why He declares: ‘And you will know the truth' (Ioan. 8, 32). As Augustine says, truth is opposed to falsehood, duplicity and vanity, for that which is true is neither false nor two-faced nor vain. Thus the words of God make us know the truth about the world, in making us know everything that is false, two-faced and vain about it.

False because the world promises fulfilment and gives nothing than emptiness, as one sees with the rich man who comes to such a chasm that he cannot have even one drop of water. In other cases, it promises pleasure and delivers bitterness. ‘For a prostitute's lips are like a honeycomb, but her end is as bitter as wormwood' (Prou. 5, 3–4). In honours it promises the highest elevation but it provides a brutal fall. ‘They take the timbrel and the harp, and rejoice to the sound of the organ. They truly lead their days in good things, and in a moment they descend to Hell' (Iob 21, 12–13). ‘You have raised me and, as if I were upon the wind, you have mightily dashed me' (Iob 30, 22).

Secondly, these worldly things are twofold and mixed. Indeed, nothing in the world is pure, everything is mixed together. ‘Your wine is mixed with water' (Isai. 1, 22). Joy is mixed with sorrow, wisdom is mixed with forgetfulness, health is mixed with illness, life is mixed with death. In this life, these things are all mixed together, while in the blessed life they will be pure, and in Hell, like muck. Indeed, God will separate sorrow from joy, forgetfulness from wisdom, illness from health; and all foulness, sorrow, forgetfulness, illness and death, he will throw into Hell, such that the saints will keep what is most pure for themselves: joy without sorrow, wisdom without forgetfulness, health without illness, life without death.

Thirdly, these worldly things are vain. They have vanity as their starting point, because they come from nothing; they have vanity in their very core, for they submit to all sorts of change; and they have vanity in their offspring, as these too come from nothing. ‘All things are subject to vanity [this refers to the vanity that is in the core of all things], they were made of earth [this refers to the vanity of their origin], and they return to earth [this refers to the vanity of their offspring] (Eccle. 3, 19–20).

The third efficacity of the word of God comes from what the words of God serve to make one arrive at complete freedom. This is why He adds: ‘And the truth shall set you free'. Those who do so have freedom of spirit, consisting in the reproach of, and abstinence from, sin. They effectively make reproaches of the vices of the powerful freely. ‘During his life he did not fear the prince and nobody defeated him through force' (Eccli. 48, 13). This freedom of spirit was also possessed by the philosophers: Diogenes the philosopher, who would reproach Alexander, heard him rejoicing in the power he enjoyed. Diogenes then replied: ‘Your power and your glory are of either the past, present or future. I do not fear that of the past, because it no longer exists. I do not fear that of the future because it is doubtful and uncertain. As to that of the present, I do not think much of it, for it is temporary and can disappear in the blink of an eye.' Such people also have liberty of spirit in abstaining from sin, for they disdain being servants of sin.

Augustine: ‘The sinner serves as many masters as there are vices.' And thus, when Alexander had declared, in front of our philosopher, that he was the ruler of the world, there came the reply: ‘You are certainly not the master, you are rather the servant of my servants. For pride is my servant but it is your master. The concupiscence of the flesh is my servant but it is your master. I have these under my feet but they control you, this is why you are the servant of my servants.' And whereas those close to Alexander wanted to attack the philosopher, Alexander said: ‘Make sure no harm comes to him, for he is the servant of God and he speaks the truth.'
